What's going on?

The clear tissue layer between the sclera (the white bit of the eye) and the conjunctiva (the clear filmy layer on the surface of the eye) is inflamed. Often we do not know why you have developed the condition but rarely it is associated with other (usually autoimmune) disorders.

This is a self limiting condition ie. it will go away by itself.

What will my ophthalmologist see?

Localised redness in the area of the inflammation.

What will my ophthalmologist do for me?

We can confirm the diagnosis with a special test and also decide on whether treatment is appropriate.

What can I do?

Not worry overly. It may look impressive but it is actually not a major problem.

What do I need to know?

This is a benign condition and recurrent episodes do not cause any long-term damage.

Unfortunately this is a recurrent condition and may affect you again.
